17-03-2022

The new Nemaska Lithium has announced that it has completed the preliminary stage of its engineering study and is now beginning a more detailed engineering phase for its future Bécancour plant. This new stage will be completed towards the end of summer 2022, with the start of construction of the lithium hydroxide processing plant scheduled for 2023.

Nemaska Lithium is now in a position to present a preliminary layout plan for the plant to be built in the Bécancour Waterfront and Industrial Park at the corners of Parc-Industriel Boulevard and Louis-Riel Road.

Environmental and social assessment in progress

At the same time, Nemaska Lithium is carrying out an environmental and social assessment in order to develop its project in compliance with the highest sustainable development standards. More specifically, this voluntary company initiative aims to assess the potential impacts of its activities and to develop mitigation and improvement measures in collaboration with the host community.

Discussions with the Waban-Aki Nation and various stakeholders in the region began in the fall of 2021 and are still ongoing. More details will be communicated in the coming weeks for those who wish to find out how to take part in our information and consultation process.

Nemaska offers an integrated ore extraction and lithium hydroxide processing project that is unique in Quebec. The high-purity lithium hydroxide that will be produced will be used in the fast-growing lithium-ion battery market, which is an essential building block in the transportation electrification sector in Quebec.

Moreover, following the recent announcement of $38 million in support granted to the Société du Parc Industriel et Port de Bécancour by the Government of Quebec, Nemaska Lithium welcomes the announcements by the companies BASF and GM who are looking to set up their respective plants in Bécancour, a true testament to the region’s vitality.
